Public Speaking Abilities

The results of a recently conducted poll showed that 40% of adults have a fear of public speaking. The fear of speaking in public can cripple one’s career as it is next to impossible to gain success in a person’s business and even in his life. In this highly competitive corporate world, unless a person is able to speak to a group of people, whether small or large, he can never mark his success. However, some people find it extremely difficult to do so and hence communication here becomes the victim. This calls for really good and effective public speaking abilities. It can be referred as performance anxiety. This irrational fear for a public speaker or stage performer is similar to what is known as writer's block. It can make one go totally blank.

The immense pressure of recalling every line of a person’s speech as well as the anxiety caused due to being on stage is a potent combination. A single mistake has the potential to spoil the presentation and that just adds to an already debilitating stage fright. And this is where the need for public speaking abilities arises. A person’s success in life is thus deeply dependant on his/her public speaking abilities, or their lack of it.

For amateurs, to learn how to speak in public is very similar to trying to eat a huge hamburger- one bite at a time. A person can practice doing so on their friends and/or family.

You can start developing good public speaking abilities by gaining a bit of information on some topic and informally introducing it at any family gathering, picnic, or outing. You must be thorough enough about the topic so as to answer almost any questions on it. Once the public speaking abilities get improved, the job gets easier as often as it is done.

Once you start to feel at ease speaking publicly in smaller and informal gatherings, you may increase the area of influence. Public speaking abilities get enhanced with practice. As the comfort level of public speaking increases one may find the earlier stress to still be present at times, but one can use it for his/her own betterment. All that is required is the willpower to make efforts.
