Team building is an important skill in itself that is necessary to work with a collective effort. Most organizations encourage team building activities to work towards a common goal. Human beings work better in teams than individually because each individual contributes according to his or her own strength.
The key aspects or highlights of a team are communication, clarity and co-ordination. Efficient teams are always good at these three aspects. A team helps you feel motivated to achieve better results or make a better decision at work.
Team building thus refers to a range of activities that concentrate on improving the team and its performance. Team building activities consists of bonding exercises, decision making exercises, communication improvement exercises, team motivational exercises etc. The main purpose of all these exercises is to improve the team and its members and the communication between them. The focus here is to bring out the best of every member and thus aim at overall team development.
Team building also involves conducting exercises that helps improve trust amongst the members. In one such session the instructor engages team members in such a way that they will have to trust and depend on one another for the task given to them. These exercises go a long way in developing trust amongst the team members which is so important while they all work towards the common goal. These games or tasks are sometimes difficult to implement however, they have proven to be effective in achieving the results.
Communications exercises are also conducted as a part and process of team building. Problem solving activities are also conducted that improve communication skills for faster decision making abilities that are required in companies to meet tight deadlines. These simulations or games usually present real-life problems and issues so that the members are exposed to the practical obstacles faced by organizations today. Sometimes even a simple ‘Chinese whisper’ or a ‘telephone’ game can highlight the importance of communication in a team. Team building instructors create activities which highlight the importance of good communication in team performance.
Thus, to form a good team, it is better to conduct some team building activities and strengthen the key features of working in a team.
