Public Speaking

It is hard to believe that one of the most common fears that people have is public speaking. However, public speaking is one of the basic skills required in the business arena. Hence, leadership demands one to be good at public speaking.

Entrepreneurs, leaders and businessmen find themselves in situations where they have to give speeches. They need to be effective communicators. Whether it is giving a speech about the company’s performance, or to convincing the investors of a project's worth or giving a motivational speech to his/her team, public speaking is required. Leadership is not just about the ability to manage and run the company effectively. Leadership is all about being able to effectively communicate with all the stakeholders of your company. Some entrepreneurs, leaders and businessmen may not be good at public speaking right at birth. In fact some of them may have faced nervousness and fear while attempting public speeches. However, smart leaders always work on their weaknesses and convert them into their strengths. Leaders can work on their speech skills and develop it over time. Most managers in a particular organization work very hard on their public speaking skill because this is one aspect that most of us are not confident about.

Entrepreneurs and businessmen who take the time to polish their public speaking and other communication skills are in turn rewarded with better business relations that lead to better business deals.

There is no other way to become a pro at public speaking than actually practice it hard. Most leaders are surrounded by many people and have many opportunities to practice their public speaking in meetings, conferences and other such settings. Such informal opportunities are perfect chances to practice the art of public speaking. Being persuasive in your speech may not come that easily to you but with practice, one learns the tricks of the trade.

One of the ways leaders can approach public speaking is to speak with only a simple outline in mind. Do not keep any notes as such as these will only make you nervous further. You should be well-versed enough in your subject to speak on it. Avoid the use of podiums as this will hide your body language and will become a hindrance to your ‘connect’ with the audience.

Public speaking is a great power that leaders can use to persuade, negotiate, communicate, motivate and achieve their goals. A little practice and some tricks can do to make you an effective public speaker.
